Profitable Open Source

. Tuesday 22 November 2011

Just imagine that Coca Cola makes its formulas available to everyone which are used to make popular soft drinks. You must be thinking that it will deal a great loss to the company but you are wrong. It can actually be profitable to them, they will be able to reach more people and will then be able to develop a better business sense. This is happening in the technological world from past years. Today's tech rockstars like Google and Facebook are moving forward using open source. These firms implemented their actions using open source in their starting years and now they are allowing everyone to use their tools freely. This kind of open sourcing has caused many start-ups.

More than 90% of supercomputing of the world is done on Linux. Many consumer products have the power of Linux backing them. Apple's products use operating systems based on Linux.

Now many companies who have earned millions through their technologies are now moving towards open sourcing of their techs. They are doing this mainly to overcome the ever increasing competition in the technological world. Google made chrome popular in less than two years by choosing the way of open source. Open source gives little or no money in the beginning but it gives people many options to select from. If your product is free and open sourced then more people will use it and it will spread rapidly among the users. In addition to that the product will get improved over time by the community of users and developers.

In the year 2010, 3800 new open source based products came in the market for mobile phones, which were double as compared to year 2009.

The biggest example of this is the apps market of android. Google has provided a platform and the developers are making apps to use on that platform. Here the platform owner and provider gets the most benefit.
