NEW DELHI: Reflecting the rising popularity of social media, more than one-in-five job seekers surveyed in India are actively scouting for employment opportunities on LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter.
Many job seekers are careful about expressing themselves on social networking sites, worrying that some content could even adversely impact their career prospects, according to global workforce solutions provider Kelly Services.
"More than one-in-five job aspirants surveyed in India access social networking sites to hunt for the right job...35 per cent of respondents are scouring social media sites, such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter, seeking job openings or promotions," it said.
Kelly Services India Managing Director Kamal Karanth said more number of recruiters are using social media, as it helps in quickening the hiring procedure apart from being cost effective.
"The medium of recruitment is shifting, partly to the social media (such as LinkedIn)... By virtue of being part of a social networking site, individuals are accessible for the job market and vice versa," Karanth told PTI.
As per the report, many respondents admitted to deliberately editing content on their social networking pages to avoid career problems.
Around 27 per cent of respondents were worried that the content from their social networking sites could adversely impact their careers.
The findings are part of the Kelly Global Workforce Index that covered about 97,000 people across 30 countries. About 2,000 people were surveyed in India.
In recent times, Karanth pointed out that there has also been a drastic reduction in recruitment through print media.
"The increased recruitment without increase in print media usage is directly attributed to the social media-based recruitment by employers and headhunters," Karanth said.
