Tutorial : How to make a Final Year Project

. Wednesday 20 April 2011

Most students become clueless when it comes to making project in their final or pre final year. These projects are important both in terms of getting good grades and also a good way of practical learning. Follow this tutorial to make your projects easily and effectively.

Starting Out
It all begins with some kind of notice or announcement by the senior faculty members or by the means of notice boards. You get the project submission notice around 2-3 months or more time before the submission date. The time table mostly consists of selecting a suitable project, getting it approved, making a team to build the project, submitting the project synopsis, project design and coding, testing of project, presentation and submission. We will discuss all of the above in detail.

Building the Team
In most colleges students are told to create group of 3-4 or sometimes 5 members to make the project. It is done for various reasons such as teaching the students how to work in teams, creating the project in less time and also the fact that more minds have more ideas. So start off by creating a team, have your friends in your team or you can ask students having good skills relevant to the project in your mind. Select your team carefully because you will need to coordinate with your team members; so avoid any conflicting people inside the team.

Project Selection
This is one the most important task of making a project. You should build a project that matches the skill set of yours and your team members. Have a talk with your team and discuss about the skills of each other member; for example : if someone is good with handling database and queries then opt for a database application, if someone has good knowledge of web based applications then go for creating a website. Select a project so that every member can contribute in making the project.

Project synopsis
Project synopsis is the basic design of the project without finalizing anything. It can contain flowcharts, ER Diagrams, Data flow diagrams etc. A detailed tutorial of creating project synopsis is given in a separate post which can be found here:
Project Synopsis Tutorial

Design and Coding
After submitting the project synopsis and project approval comes the actual part of building the project. Use the following method to make the project : divide the project in different modules like database design, design of user interface, coding etc. Have your team members working on those modules coordinating with each other. After completion combine all the modules and create a working version. Test it and if you need to do any corrections then do them; follow the process of testing-correcting until you get the final version.

Project Report
You have to create the project report after the creation of the project and then submit it later on. Project report should be in a specific format specified by your project guide; unless otherwise specified you can follow this post for making good project report:

Presentation and Submission
For the submission of your project create separate project reports for all the team members having their name and names of team members on it (refer to ….). You may have to give a presentation or oral test about the project and the technologies used to make it; so prepare in advance for the presentation. You may also have to show the project by running it so have a copy in a portable storage device like a pen drive available with you.

Summary
The whole process of project creation and submission is very rewarding both career wise and for improving your practical working skills. Be prepared, be confident and most importantly have fun.
